Science Editing Webinar Series Covering Health Care: Covid and Beyond On-Demand

Carmel Shachar, JD, MPH, is the Executive Director of the
Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School. She is responsible for oversight of the Center’s sponsored research portfolio, event programming, fellowships, student engagement, development, and a range of other projects and collaborations. Carmel was responsible fo designing, recruiting for, and launching both the Center’s Health Care General Counsel Roundtable and the Center’s Advisory Board. She is involved heavily with the Center’s Project on Precision Medicine, Artificial Intelligence, and the Law, and its Diagnosing in the Home Initiative. Carmel is also a Lecturer at Law on Harvard Law School, where she co-teaches a course on “Health Care Rights in the Twenty-First Century.” Carmel’s scholarship focuses on law and health policy, in particular the regulation of access to care for vulnerable individuals, the use of telehealth and digital health products, and the application of public health ethics to real world questions.

Erin Brodwin is a health-tech reporter at STAT, a health-and-medicine news site affiliated with The Boston Globe. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, she focuses her reporting on Silicon Valley power players like Apple, Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Microsoft and their ambitions in health care. Before joining STAT, Erin spent five years as a health-and-science reporter at Business Insider, where she wrote the definitive account of what went wrong at the microbiome start-up uBiome, leading to an FBI investigation and the company’s eventual bankruptcy. She has been interviewed on NPR and the BBC and has had her work cited by outlets including The New York Times and the World Economic Forum.

Katherine J. Wu is a staff writer for The Atlantic, where she covers science. She is also a Story Collider senior producer. She previously served as a science reporter for The New York Times, a staff writer for NOVA Next, and an early career fellow at the Open Notebook. She was also a AAAS Mass Media Fellow at Smithsonian magazine and a production editor at Undark. In 2018, she earned a Ph.D. in microbiology and immunobiology from Harvard University. She is the 2020 winner of the Evert Clark/Seth Payne Award for Young Science Journalists.
