Science Editing Webinar Series Using Social Media to Source and Spread Science Journalism On-Demand

Chaseedaw Giles is an artist and creative storyteller working as the Social Media Editor for Kaiser Health News (KHN) where she manages the newsroom’s social media channels and co-produces KHN’s video mini-series “Behind the Byline”. Her own bylines can be found in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, NPR, the Daily Beast and more. Before KHN, as the Social Media and Communications Specialist for the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), she started the society’s annual Agar Art contest, where microbiologists draw on petri dishes with bacteria to create artwork. The international contest has been featured in Huffington Post, Discover Magazine and USA Today. She also wrote about using social media for science communication in ASM’s Cultures Magazine. She has a BA in Communications from Boston College and received her Social Media Management Certification at Georgetown University’s School of Continuing Studies.

Katie Fleeman is audience-engagement editor at Knowable Magazine, where she manages social media, republishing, and analytics. She learned about academic publishing at PLOS and then dove into the media start-up world at ATTN:. Sukee Bennett is the senior digital editor at NOVA, where she manages its social strategy, writes weekly newsletters, reports, writes and edits science news articles, and collaborates on its YouTube series “Parentalogic” and podcast “NOVA Now.” She earned a master’s in science communication from UC Santa Cruz and a bachelor’s in ecology and evolutionary biology from the University of Colorado, Boulder. A former New England Aquarium educator, she has an endless passion for animals, conservation, and the outdoors (and thinks astronomy is really cool, too).
